Headless Hill 6 (Start Anywhere)

This course takes in Headless Hill and Reddings Inclosure, on the slopes of the Wye Valley below Staunton. Although only 6 miles in length along the mapped trail, it includes quite a bit of climbing, so is by no means a doddle. As with most of our trail races, the objective is to visit the controls in the correct order, as fast as possible. The trail is marked on your map, but you don't have to follow it; you are encouraged to use the map to find short cuts, either on paths or cross-country, and so get round quicker. These trails are designed to help improve your map reading and navigation skills. The marked trail, and the optional maprun facility to show you where you are on the map, are simply designed in part as safety nets, and in part as aids to confidence building in navigation.

Note that as a Start Anywhere course, you don't have to start at the designated start....you can start at any control, but must then visit the controls in order, taking in the designated start/finish en route as just another control, and finishing where you started. You need to be using MaprunF v4.8.8 or later to take advantage of this facility.

Parking is in the wide forest track entrance on the right of the A4136 about 500m down the hill past the outskirts of Staunton. If you are coming up the hill from Monmouth, it is on the left a couple of hundred meters after the big layby on the left, opposite Broadstones campsite. The layby provides alternative parking if the forest gate is full, which it can be at weekends when the bikers are out in force. The nearest postcodes are not helpful but GL16 8PA is the best option, at the top of the hill on the edge of Staunton. Go past it if coming from the East/Coleford. If coming from the West you'll have passed the parking place when you get to GL16 8PA!

Start and Finish are about 350m down the forest track from the parking area, at the first major track junction you come to, or at any other control if running with maprunF v 4.8.8. In this event you follow the control sequence as before, but the designated Start/Finish becomes just another control, and you finish at the control from which you started.
